I had the opportunity to visit Newport, Rhode Island as my first day ashore during my Cunard cruise. With only eight hours to explore, I wanted to capture as much of this charming coastal city as possible. Newport blends rich Gilded Age history with New England elegance. It offers travelers a chance to stroll among breathtaking mansions. You can cruise along the harbor and indulge in elevated dining by the sea. While I only had a short time, this city left me wanting to return for a full luxury escape.
Itinerary: One Day in Newport


Morning: Trolley Tour of the City
Start with the Red Trolley Tour, a perfect way to see Newport’s highlights in a limited timeframe. With a knowledgeable guide, you’ll pass historic landmarks, sweeping ocean views, and iconic mansions while learning stories of America’s elite.
Midday: Explore The Breakers
Disembark at The Breakers, the Vanderbilt family’s summer “cottage” and one of Newport’s most spectacular estates. Even with just one hour, the grandeur of the mansion’s interiors and the dramatic oceanfront grounds are unforgettable. Ideally, set aside at least half a day to make time for the gardens and on-site dining.








Afternoon: Scenic Highlights
If time allows, add a stroll along Cliff Walk, where rugged coastline meets the backyards of Gilded Age estates. For a taste of luxury shopping and charm, explore Thames Street and Bowen’s Wharf, lined with boutiques and waterfront cafés.
Evening: Coastal Dining
